College hockey players of the week: Game-winning goals in conference playoffs highlight Three Stars
The conference playoffs brought out numerous standpoint performances, none more impressive then those by the stars of the week.
1) Jonathan Charbonneau, Merychurst
The Saint-Colomban, Quebec native scored both game-winning goals to lead Mercyhurst to a sweep of Sacred Heart in Atlantic Hockey quarterfinal action. In Friday’s 4-2 victory he had a hat trick for the Lakers. On Saturday, the senior forward scored two more goals, including the game-winner in overtime in a 3-2 win over the Pioneers. On the weekend, he totaled six points on five goals and an assist in addition to 11 shots on goal and a +4 rating. He improved his season totals to 29 points on 17 goals and 12 assists.
2) Ryan Donato, Harvard
The U.S. Olympic star rallied the Crimson to a ECAC Hockey quarterfinal series victory over Dartmouth. The series started with a 4-1 loss on Friday night as the Boston native had an assist on his team’s only goal. On Saturday, the junior forward had four points on a goal and three assists as Harvard defeated the Big Green, 7-1. In the series-clinching game on Sunday, Donato had a hat trick in the 4-2 victory. He finished the weekend with eight points on four goals and four assists while also adding 19 shots on goal and a +4 rating.
3) Hunter Shepard, Minnesota Duluth
The sophomore netminder posted back-to-back shutouts in the Bulldogs’ NCHC quarterfinal sweep of Western Michigan. In Friday’s series opener he stopped all 26 Bronco shots in a 5-0 victory. On Saturday it was more of the same as he made 19 saves in a 2-0 win. The Cohasset, Minn. native now has eight shutouts on the season and a .927 save percentage, while lowering his goals-against average to 1.92.
